If Darth Vader could bake…

Calling all Star Wars and chocolate cake geeks!

I finally FINALLY got my hands on a standing mixer! This is a huge upgrade for My Brooklyn Kitchen. I can give my little hand mixer a well deserved break from all the baking I’ve been doing these past months. It’s served its purpose well, but I’m ready to bake bread with its ultra-powerful dough hook. And tender, fine-crumb pound cakes that are virtually impossible to make without a standing mixer. This thing is truly a carb lovers delight. Yay!

I just took it out of the box and I’m already in love with it. I’m the kind of person that never reads User Manuals, so of course the first thing I do is go commando and bake a bundt cake. Deep dark chocolate bundt cake just in time for bathing suit season. I always think women and men look better with a little belly bulge anyway. Ha!

This recipe is a killer with five eggs, almost a pound of butter, a cup of sour cream, half-pound of bittersweet chocolate and two cups brown sugar. The first step is to get all the ingredients to room temp to get the right consistency. The second is to beat the butter and sugar until it’s light and fluffy. I watch in amazement as the mixer quietly yet powerfully turns butter and sugar into froth. Wow.

A few minutes later and the cake is ready to go in the oven. I’m as cool as a cucumber without the usual wrangling of attachments and electrical cord plus gripping the mixing bowl with one hand as I wrestle with the mixer with the other.

My boyfriend was the bake “watcher” as I ran to the food co-op to do a make-up shift. He aced the toothpick test and removed the cake from the pan completely unscathed. I ran home post-shift to admire the perfect cake. We both laughed. If Darth Vader baked cakes, it would look just like this.

I’m happy to report that no humans were harmed during the making or eating of this cake. It was very yummy.

Even Vader has a sweet tooth!
